KBM’s Technical Services Division conducts the following tree improvement services for several clients in Northwestern Ontario; Seedling Testing and Tree Improvement Lab at KBM Forestry Consultants began in 1998. From modest beginnings, it has slowly expanded in response to client demand.
Pollen Collection & Extraction - high quality pollen is collected, dried, extracted and stored for future use to produce cones with high seed yield.
Pollen Viability Testing - stored pollen is tested for viability before cross-pollination is carried out.
Cross-Pollination - trees are identified and isolated at the best time for cross-pollination. Selected pollen is injected onto pre-determined trees. The ultimate goal is to produce genetically superior trees.
Scion Collection – branch cutting (scion) is taken from a pre-selected tree for grafting onto a young root stock.
Plantation planting – out-planting of nursery tree stock.
