Joint venture with Whitesand First Nation: Project Summary
|
In 1996 KBM Forestry Consultants Inc. signed a five-year joint venture agreement with Whitesands First Nation (WFN) to provide site preparation services for a forest products company. The decision to joint venture was based on a number of factors including: KBM specializes in the delivery of site preparation services in other parts of northwestern Ontario; WFN had a local workforce and vested interest in the forest but lacked the skills and capital to offer site preparation services; together, the parties could forge a mutually beneficial relationship.
KBM represented the joint venture in all negotiations with the forestry company, securing the contract including an advance payment of sufficient amount for the down payment on a prime mover for the operation. The prime mover would be wholly owned by WFN. The advance was repaid through a rate reduction formula within two years. Profits earned in the operation would be split evenly by the two parties.
The five-year relationship has now ended. Achievments include:
|
- Completion of the contract in each of the five years;
- Complete repayment of all loans, resulting in full ownership of a prime mover by WFN without any need for capital outlay;
- Training of WFN operators permitting facets of the venture that included machine operation all to be performed by band members of WFN;
- Training of WFN operators in non-operating duties including; First Aid; WHMIS; Forest Fire fighting; and mechanical and welding duties related to equipment maintenance and repair.
